The Dance Centre Workshop Experience

Dance Saskatchewan Inc. offered a program to elementary school classes through the months of March and April 2008. The program targeted schools interested in giving their students an educational experience that included an introduction to dance. The participants were all students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in dance in their communities.

Coordinated by Taisa Trischuk, the project also included a tour of the DSI Centre which provided information on all the opportunities available in dance. Students also learned about related services such as Massage Therapy and all the jobs related to dance performance productions. Students had an opportunity to visit the Resource Centre and to learn how the Resource Library is used.

The day included an introductory, high-energy dance and movement experience. The classes were developed and delivered by enthusiastic, well qualified instructors.

A total of five teachers participated in the program. These included Stevie J. Taylor, Breann Heggie, Noelle Tourney, Seth Olson and Tonia Stefiuk. More than 100 students participated in the program from Lakeview, Confederation Park School and Wildwood School.

The program provided dance resource information to classroom teachers wanting to incorporate more movement and dance education in to their curriculum to continue with the Dance Centre experience.
