HOW OUR GRANTS WORK
The explanation of our grant process is provided so you may understand our timetable and why your projects must occur after October 1st each year. Dance Saskatchewan Inc. grants are never a guarantee, but the Application Requirements and criteria used are meant to be fair and equitable. If you wish changes, please bring them to an Annual General Meeting.

APPLICATION FORMS

Application forms are available on line.

Forms will only be mailed to members who do not reside in any of the cities noted above.

INDEPENDENT GRANT COMMITTEE REVIEWS ALL APPLICATIONS

This three-person committee is appointed by the DSI Board and is comprised of non-Dance Saskatchewan Inc. members. They review the grant based on the merits of the project. They do not know the names of the grant applicants; they only look at the project. They rate the project and rank it against the other projects in the same category. They also determine the amount of funds for each project. In some cases, the Committee may recommend specific conditions in awarding the grant, or may recommend to the Board that an interview or audition be conducted.

INDEPENDENT GRANT COMMITTEE SUBMITS A WRITTEN REPORT TO THE DSI BOARD

THE DSI BOARD REVIEWS THIS WRITTEN REPORT
The names of the grant applicants are still not released to the Board or the Independent Grant Committee. Upon approval of the report, the total dollar amount of the approved grant applications is placed into the budget of Dance Saskatchewan Inc.

THE DSI BUDGET IS PRESENTED TO THE CULTURAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Cultural Advisory Committee (CAC) is an elected body from the membership of SaskCulture. The DSI budget is submitted by May 15th and includes information from the Member applications. The DSI budget is reviewed by the CAC within 6-8 weeks.

DANCE SASKATCHEWAN INC. DEFENDS THE BUDGET

Representatives of the DSI Board meet in June with the CAC to justify our budget request in detail.

BUDGET AMOUNT IS DETERMINED
By July Dance Saskatchewan Inc. learns the amount of the grant it was awarded. Because the total of all grant requests always exceeds the amount of money available, DSI then revises its budget for our financial year, which begins on October 1st. After the DSI budget has been revised, individuals and groups are informed about their grant request in writing. The final decision on the awarding of grants rests solely with the DSI Board.

GENERAL
DSI Mission Statement: "Dance Saskatchewan Inc. is committed to the advancement of dance".
DSI Purpose Statements:

  • To support and enhance the development of all dance forms;
  • To preserve, promote and represent dance in Saskatchewan;
  • To educate about dance;
  • To encourage a passion for dance.
  • To provide a multidisciplinary centre that focuses on dance, integrates related art forms, with expanded opportunities in a wellness environment.

As the provincial organization representing dance in our province, DSI receives funds from Saskatchewan Lotteries to further our mission and purpose. A portion of these funds is allocated to our Member Funding program for groups and individuals.
Grants are available to members who assist DSI in achieving its purpose and mission. Grants are available for dance related projects such as:

  • Annual Dance Festivals
  • Annual Dance Competitions
  • Summer Schools
  • Workshops
  • Teacher & Student Exchange Programs
  • Educational Projects

NOTE: If you are unsure if your project is eligible, please contact the office.

  3. Letters or briefs will not be accepted in lieu of properly completed application forms.
  4. In the case of grants for schooling, DSI reserves the right to make confirmation of the grant conditional upon receipt of evidence that appropriate authorizations have been obtained to ensure that the project will proceed as presented in the proposal. For scholarships and tuition, DSI requires that the appropriate school authorities provide documentary proof of the applicant's acceptance into the program.
  5. Fifty percent (50%) of the awarded amount will be disbursed upon receipt of the written request to release the funds. The balance of the grant will be disbursed after the Final Report has been submitted and approved by DSI.
  6. Funds are granted for the specific purpose and plans presented in the original application unless otherwise stated in the grant notice. The grant is "global" -- in other words, specific amounts for budget items may be revised, but only when:
    • They do not result in any fundamental difference in the project plans approved by the Independent Grant Committee and Board of Directors. The intent of the project should remain the same.
    • They do not result in expenditures exceeding the maximum set by the Board for specific items (e.g., kilometer reimbursement and daily food allowance).
    • They do not result in a departure from any specific conditions laid down by the committee in its recommendations to the Board.
  7. A grant will be automatically terminated if the grant recipient moves to another country before completing the project.
  8. DSI reserves the right to request a refund for any unspent balance, or for funds allocated to an unauthorized item.
  9. If DSI funds are used to create a new work, a video copy may be housed at the DSI Resource Centre.
