National Message 2010

You are dancers, all of you. Life moves you; life dances you. To dance is to investigate and celebrate the experience of being alive. Like life, a dance creates and destroys itself in every moment. Like love, it is beyond reason. Ephemeral as breath, concrete as bone, dance is made of you. You sculpt space. You write with your body in a wordless language that is deeply understood. You grace the space within and around you when you dance. Force, trajectory, inertia, and recovery: dancing is a ride, a duet between your instinct and imagination. To dance is to heighten your experience of the present moment. Your body is your location - when you dance, you are profoundly engaged in being there. To dance is to feel the resonance of your life, to delight in your existence. To be human is to be danced by experience, energy and emotion. On International Dance Day, let’s celebrate the life that moves us.
International Dance Day Message 2010
Julio Bocca

Dance is discipline, work, teaching, communication. With it we save on words that perhaps others would not understand and, instead, we establish a universal language familiar to everyone. It gives us pleasure, it makes us free and it comforts us from the impossibility we humans have to fly like birds, bringing us closer to heaven, to the sacred, to the infinite.
It is a sublime art, different each time, so much like making love that at the end of each performance it leaves our heart beating very hard and looking forward to the next time.

Peter Bingham/EDAM residency in Regina and Saskatoon
Peter Bingham/EDAM
Slip & Basement Suite in D Minor
Two new works by EDAM, choreographed by Peter Bingham
Slip focuses on the duet form; the Piano and Cello form the musical duet that lives alongside the dancing. Just as Bach gives each instrument equal power of expression, each of the dancers supports and flies in an egalitarian physical exchange.
In Basement Suite in D Minor, the physical interplay between the music and Peter is fundamental. He plays at, with and through the music; acting as the ground he walks on, or, in this case, the floor on which he dances. Peter develops each section through improvising with the shifting emotions and mathematics inherent in the music.
Peter Bingham is one of the pioneers of Contact Improvisation, a dance form that emphasizes flow and the cooperative exchange of weight between partners. The "touch and tumble" of Contact is a hallmark of much of his choreography, lending both athleticism and graceful elegance to his partnering and ensemble work.
The Bingham/EDAM residency
Sunday, March 7th - Meet and greet and more with Peter Bingham at the NDH studio in Regina. Here, guests can look forward to the world premiere of a new dance video by Chris Randal, entitled "30 x 30 & the RESPONSE", which documents the 30th performance of 30 x 30 by Paul-André Fortier in Vancouver at the 2010 Dancing on the Edge Festival followed by a danced response by Peter Bingham. Copies of The Man Next Door, the art of Peter Bignham, an intriguing dance book about Peter and his work by Kaji Pepper will also be available for purchase and signing. This meet and greet provides a rare chance to meet Peter and hear more about his unique body of work and artistic practice.
Tuesday, March 9th - Contact Improvisation classes at Youth Ballet (1106 McNiven Ave) from 6:15 – 8:15 pm
Wednesday, March 10th - Contact Improvisation classes at New Dance Horizons from 10 – 12 pm.

DCA Now Accepting Applications for 2010 Gary Parks Scholarship
The Dance Critics Association is pleased to offer the 2010 Gary Parks Scholarships, named for the late, well-loved reviews editor for Dance Magazine. His position there made him a point of contact for dance writers around the world, and a friend and mentor to many people in the field -- this scholarship, to the DCA annual conference, is designed to encourage that same sense of collegiality.
This year the DCA will offer up to three scholarships of $500 for emerging or experienced writers to attend the annual conference in NY, July 16-18, 2010. (DCA will make fewer awards if criteria are not met.) The DCA is meeting with the World Dance Alliance for a conference centered on dance and criticism -- the WDA conference runs July 12-17.
The Emerging Writers' scholarship is designated for a critic with less than three years of professional experience. The scholarship includes complimentary admission to the entire conference and up to $500 to cover travel and lodging expenses. It is hoped that offering an opportunity to interact with established colleagues in the field, both formally and informally, will be of benefit. The recipient will be required to attend and complete writing assignments for the Kamikaze Workshop. Additionally, the recipient will be required to attend the entire conference and write an article detailing an aspect of the conference for the DCA News, topics and deadlines to be negotiated with the editor. The Experienced Writer's scholarship was established to support critics who, because of great distance from the conference site or challenging financial reasons (freelance writer or staffer with no financial support from publication), could not otherwise attend the conference. The recipient of the Experienced Writer's scholarship will be expected to attend all conference events and panels and report on an agreed upon topic for the DCA News, deadlines to be negotiated with the editor.
To apply:
All applicants must submit three published reviews or critical essays, along with a cover letter. The cover letter should specify which scholarship - emerging or experienced -is being requested, state professional qualifications and discuss why the applicant feels that he or she would benefit from attending the DCA conference. Any special circumstances that you feel are relevant should also be addressed, including financial need, the fact that the applicant specializes in a particular form of criticism or that English is the critic's second language.
Submit materials via email to: sandik@drizzle.com, or if applicant does not have access to email, submit three copies of entire application to: Gary Parks Scholars, c/o Sandra Kurtz, 1317 NE 66th St. Seattle, WA 98115. The emerging writers' scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis. The experienced writers' fellowship will be awarded via a lottery. Deadline for receiving applications is March 30, 2010. Applicants will be notified by April 30 in time to make arrangements to attend the conference. Questions? Email: sandik@drizzle.com.
The Gary Parks Scholarship exists with the generous support of the critical community. If you would like to help us extend this opportunity to our colleagues in the field, please seriously consider a tax-deductible contribution to the Gary Parks Scholarship Fund. Send your contribution, marked "Gary Parks" in the memo line to: DCA, POB 1882 Old Chelsea Station, New York, NY 10011.
What A Previous Gary Parks Scholar Says:
"Forget the loneliness of the long distance runner, dance writers top that hands-down. Not too many choose this career path, all for sound reasons. Those who do, choose to because we love dance and have something to offer the public in the way of our perceptions and opinions. I was a relative newbie when I received the Gary Parks Scholarship. It was wonderful to meet folks who, despite less than ideal circumstances, keep on writing. I felt welcomed into this world. Elizabeth Zimmer's no nonsense voice is still in my head when I take pen to paper. Dance writing friends are a must for survival in this difficult business."

Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba Bring Cuban Heat to Saskatchewan Spring
The Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) and its member Arts Councils in Yorkton and Swift Current, are pleased to present Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba, in concert. The performance will be part of the 2009/2010 Stars for Saskatchewan series.
Cuba’s most popular dance company that is beloved around the world, Havana-based Dance Cuba has remained since its founding over fifteen years ago under the inspired creative direction of dancer-choreographer Lizt Alfonso.
The all-female company of 17 beautiful and technically superb dancers performs "with amazing unanimity" (New York Times) and with "sheer technical finesse" (Chicago Sun-Times). Accompanied by an on-stage ensemble of 6 remarkable mostly-male musicians, Dance Cuba fuses the rapidly clacking heels of the flamenco, with the flowing grace of classical ballet, added to the hot passion of Afro-Cuban dance with a touch of jazz. Altogether it is exciting, riveting and highly sensual. Fuerza y Compás features 17 female dancers and 6 musicians on stage and offers a medley of short numbers merging Spanish rhythms and Cuban sounds in a spectacular show that will delight all audiences. This spectacular show is a unique blend of sensuality, passion and poise that is not short on pizzazz!
OSAC annually presents over 300 live community and school performances, attended by a total audience of approximately 75,000. This is possible because of a dedicated network of volunteers committed to making culture an integral part of Saskatchewan community life, and vital funding from Saskatchewan Lotteries, Saskatchewan Arts Board, and Canadian Heritage. Saskatchewan Lotteries benefits more than 12,000 sport, culture, and recreation organizations around the province. Each year 600,000 people participate in programs and from activities initiated by these organizations, over $1 billion of economic activity is generated, and 23,000 jobs are sustained.
Please refer to the attached tour schedule for times, dates and locations. For further information, please contact the local Arts Council or OSAC. Please visit www.osac.sk.ca or www.stationbleue.com for more information.
