Biography of Danny Grossman

Danny Grossman was born in San Francisco in 1942. As a teenager, his first modern dance teacher was Gloria Unti who inspired him to continue in dance. In 1963, he joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company in New York and spent the next 10 years performing and touring with the company.

In 1973, at the invitation of David Earle, Mr. Grossman joined Toronto Dance Theatre, working as a guest artist and on faculty. The following year he also became a faculty member at York University.

In 1975, Mr. Grossman choreographed Higher to a tremendous praise leading to the formation of the Danny Grossman Dance Company in 1977. He has since created a repertoire of more than 40 works, touring numerous times across Canada and internationally.

His choreography has been in the repertoire of Toronto Dance Theatre, The Paris Opera Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and The National Ballet of Canada and has also been performed by modern dance training institutions such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, New York State Summer School of the Arts, York University, Adelphi University (Long Island), School of Toronto Dance Theatre, Brock University and DanceEast (Moncton).

Mr. Grossman has been the recipient of the Dora Mavor Moore Award, the Jean A. Chalmers Award, The Dance Ontario Award, The Toronto Arts Council Foundation’s William Kilbourn Lifetime Achievement Award, and Muriel Sherrin Award. Mr. Grossman continues in his role as adjunct Professor in the Department of Dance at York University.

In 2008, the company embarked on an exciting new initiative, the Danny Grossman Dance Institute, as a means of preserving, reconstructing, and licensing Mr. Grossman’s remarkable repertoire and thus enabling conservatories, colleges, universities, as well as professional repertory companies to benefit from Mr. Grossman’s vast archive of works.

BIOGRAPHY:

Vanessa de Jesus -  Brazilian dance teacher   (Stage name is NessaV)

Daughter of Mestre Eclilson de Jesus, NessaV began learning Capoeira (Afro-Brazilian martial arts/acrobatic dance) and other Brazilian dance forms at the age of 5 with her father.  When she was 10 years old, she started a carrer in dancing and performing with Aché Brasil Touring group.

NessaV traveled many times to Brazil to perfect Capoeira and other Afro-Brazilian dances and began teaching at the Capoeira Aché Brasil Academy at the age of 16.

While on tour with Aché Brasil, NessaV taught dance workshops all over North America and recently in China and Japan.  She has been featured in music videos including, "The Rascals" and "Transfiguration" airing on Much Music as well as many other TV programs including ZED/CBC, Select/MTV, On the Road Again/CBC.

ABOUT SAMBA:

The samba is the most popular musical genre and dance in Brazil, well known and associated abroad with soccer and Carnaval It’s captivating rhythm personifies the Brazilian Carnaval, meaning "Mardi-Gras."   The Samba music rhythm has been danced in Brazil since its inception in the late 19th century.  It’s high energy rhythms give the basis for the dance which uses lots of hips and foot movements.  Dancers dress in bright, colourful, dazzling costumes with huge feathered headdresses. There is actually a set of dances, rather than a single dance, that define the Samba dancing scene in Brazil; thus, no one dance can be claimed with certainty as the "original" Samba style. Carnaval is the biggest festival of the year in Brazil where people prepare all year to take the streets for several days and nights. The whole country shuts down for this event and there is lots of dancing!  In reality, the samba schools are large organizations of up to 5000 people which compete annually in the Carnival with thematic floats, elaborate costumes and original music.

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Saskatoon Presents: Alice in Sketchyland

Friday June 18th, 2010 Doors open at 7pm

Cover charge: $10.00 Live Models, Performances, Music, Cash Bar Age 19+

Fall down the rabbit hole with us on June 18th for "Alice in Sketchyland"--wonderfully dark scenes inspired by Lewis Caroll’s classic tale.  For your sketching pleasure, we’re presenting five amazing goth models: Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Dutchess and her Handsome Pig Baby!  And if you can believe impossible things, you’ll be treated to performances by Alice and the White Rabbit.  Bring your own sketchpad and drawing materials; doors open at 7pm, and the first pose will be at 7:30.  Seating at the Free Flow Dance Centre will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t be late for this very important date!  The door fee is $10, there's a cash bar, and please bring tips for your hard-working models.  Drawing experience is not required...this event is open to everyone!  For more information, visit our Facebook page or call the Free Flow Dance Centre at 665-5998.

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School is art class meets cabaret.  How is Dr. Sketchy's different from a normal life drawing class? In normal life classes, silent students sit in a silent room and draw a bored, oft-uninteresting model. At Dr. Sketchy's we've got scandalous performers as models. We've got ridiculous art contests (best incorporation of a woodland animal? Calgaryʼs Dancersʼ Studio West and Reginaʼs New Dance Horizons present: The Prairie Dance Circuit

The Prairie Dance Circuit Project is a special initiative aimed at enhancing, growing and developing a regional
forum for professional contemporary dance practice in the prairie dance region.  The project expands the
audience and artistic base of dance through a circuit of professional dance presentation tours, training programs,
creation projects, mentorship projects and opportunities.  By creating synergies with other contemporary dance
presentation companies in Western Canada, the Prairie Dance Circuit is encouraging creative collaborations
among Western Canadian arts organizations in an effort to realize a stronger, more vibrant prairie dance
community.
For our first exchange, we have chosen to present emerging dance artists.  We consider emerging artists to be those
who have a body of work which has been developed and recognized in their own prairie community.  These artists
are not beginners.  The choreographers have been selected from each city and will be mentored by the presenter from
their community.  The mentors are regarded as senior dance artists in each of their communities.

Choreographers: Alison Bryan & Hilary Maxwell
Dancers: Kaja Irwin, Jennifer Jaspar, Samantha Pink & Laura Smyth
Mentors: Davida Monk, DSW Artistic Director & Robin Poitras, NDH Artistic Director

Works in Progress

Have you ever wondered what is going on in a choreographer's mind? What is their creative process like? Where do they get ideas and inspiration from and how do these things all result in a completed dance piece? The W.I.P is the place to find out! If you love dance or are even just a little bit curious about it then this is the series for you!

The W.I.P. was founded in 2003 by Jackie Latendresse and presented fifteen different choreographers during its first season. It was followed by a second season in 2004 which presented the work of nine independent choreographers. In 2006 we collaborated with Zen Prairie Dance to present Progressions: Presentations which featured six more choreographers in both Saskatoon and Regina. The WIP Series presents in studio showing of works in progress and culminates in an annual Gala of finished works. This series is designed to provide a venue for both emerging and professional choreographers who are working in the area of contemporary and experimental choreography and is open to all artists working in this vein in both the province of Saskatchewan and across Canada. Each in studio performance will present 4-5 different choreographers.

To our VIEWERS:
The most important aspect of this new series is YOU! Yes it is the audience. You will get a chance to meet the choreographers and hear them speak about their work. Each choreographer will ask the audience for certain types of feedback that they feel will be instrumental to helping them further develop their work. The work will then be presented to you and afterwards you will be given a few moments to jot down your observations, comments, criticisms or even doodles are welcome! This audience feedback will be collected at the end of the performance and distributed to the choreographers.

This series is the first of its kind in Saskatchewan and is fast becoming a staple in Saskatchewan's Dance Diet! So everybody W.I.P. it up! If you would like to help out by volunteering for the series please contact us at 665-5998 or by email at freeflowdance@hotmail.com

Choreographers are invited to send applications to
