CROSSHATCH: a meeting place for dance arts from Saskatchewan

Under Dance Saskatchewan and Artistic Director, Deanna Peters, Dare to Dance was reformed into what was called CROSSHATCH: a meeting place for dance arts from Saskatchewan. RBC Dominion Securities' CROSSHATCH, did not stray from highlighting Saskatchewan's talent; the difference is that this new showcase focused on the presentation of professional and semi-professional artists and organizations from across the province.

With a brand new mandate, CROSSHATCH toured to Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Regina this fall. Audiences saw exciting new dance, as well as visual art, film, live music, sound design and lighting. The name CROSSHATCH was chosen as it evokes the interactions among choreographers, dancers and other collaborators; each unique, yet attuned to one another, interweaving as part of a bigger picture. The touring aspect of CROSSHATCH gave the artists involved the opportunity to get to know each other. The same cast worked together to mount all six shows, strengthening the community's ties and fostering new partnerships. From here, the possibilities are infinite.

Originally from Saskatoon, Deanna Peters is a graduate of the dance programs at Grant MacEwan College and Simon Fraser University. She has worked in contemporary dance and theatre for Barbara Bourget, Bunting Dance, Peter Chin, Bill Coleman, Co. Erasga, Paul-Andre Fortier, Karen Jamieson Dance, Kinesis Dance Soma Theatro, Kokoro Dance Theatre, Diego Maranan, Tanya Marquardt/Proximity Arts, Mascall Dance and the Story of Force and Motion. Her choreography has been presented in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Toronto and Vancouver. Mutable Subject is a company to support her work. Some of her teaching credits include Arts Umbrella, Dance Saskatchewan, Harbour Dance Centre, Kokoro Dance Theatre and New Dance Horizons. Deanna is excited to bring her experiences as a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher and producer to the Saskatchewan dance community. She sees CROSSHATCH as an opportunity to nurture dancers as artists and to give them the skills to continue working in the province.

We are thrilled to announce that Robin Poitras, from New Dance Horizons in Regina, was the CROSSHATCH Guest Choreographer. Robin, along with Deanna, choreographed on this year's company of twelve dancers.

Company auditions were held on August 9th at the DSI Centre. There were over 40 applicants, aged 16 or older, who attended or applied remotely. From this, the twelve dancers were chosen. The CROSSHATCH company members are Ashley Berrns, Megan Daniels, Kyle Dolan, Kara Dubyk, Jenelle Garchinski, Tyler Layton Olson, Karsen Marshall, Katie McGuigan Scott, Chisa Seniuk, Erin Sheppard, Makenna Sheppard and Braiden Stevenson. These dancers range in age from 16-26 and represent various Saskatchewan communities. Deanna and Robin lead these dancers in training, creation and discussion within contemporary dance aesthetics.

Dancers aged 14 were invited to attend daily technique classes with Deanna and guest artists throughout the months of August and September:

These classes were also being held remotely for the community in La Ronge and surrounding areas. Thank you to Charlene Bosiak and Jonas Roberts Hall.

Guest teachers for the month of August were Megan Daniels, Jill Henis, Kara Dubyk and Joseph Ashong.

Thank you to those that came and supported some of the province's most imaginative artists!
